RED DEER — Sixteen teams in AEHL U15 AAA are competing for the chance to be crowned league champions, with the first round set to begin tonight. Five matchups will take to the ice this evening, while the remaining three matchups will commence on Thursday and Friday.
In the North Division, the St. Albert Sabres claimed the top seed with a record of 29-3-1-1 totaling 60 points. The Calgary Northstars finished first in the South Division, posting a record of 30-3-0-1, for a total of 61 points. Together, these top-seeded teams accounted for only six regulation losses during the season.
The St. Albert Sabres were the highest-scoring team, netting a total of 231 goals, which is 49 more than the second-place Calgary Northstars. On the other hand, the Calgary Northstars allowed the fewest goals throughout the regular season, conceding only 75.
First-year Red Deer Rebels forward Madden Daneault finished the regular season with an impressive 93 points in just 33 games, averaging nearly three points per game (2.82), which earned him the title of the league’s leading scorer. St. Albert Sabres forward Walker Filewich scored the most goals of the season, finding the back of the net 45 times in 34 games. Calgary Northstars goaltender Mason McDougall excelled in the statistical categories, claiming the top spot in all three major goaltending stats. McDougall recorded 16 wins over the season, suffering only one loss, while posting a 1.94 goals-against average and a .933 save percentage.
